Mogadishu (Somali Report) - Algeria has started the process of terminating its air services agreement with the United Arab Emirates, originally signed in Abu Dhabi in May 2013, state media reported on Saturday.

No immediate explanation was provided, though Algerian media have recently criticized the UAE, accusing it of interfering in regional affairs and attempting to sow discord.

“Algeria has initiated procedures to end the air services agreement with the UAE, signed on 13 May 2013 and ratified by presidential decree on 30 December 2014,” the state-owned radio said.

Under Article 22 of the deal, the UAE must be officially notified through diplomatic channels, and the Secretary-General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will be informed to take the necessary steps. There was no immediate reaction from the UAE.

Last October, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said relations with Gulf states remain positive, except for one country, a thinly veiled reference to the UAE.

He described ties with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar as “brotherly,” while accusing the unnamed country of meddling in Algeria’s domestic affairs and attempting to destabilize the nation.
