Turkey will deploy two naval warships, TCG Gökçeada and TCG Yıldırım, to Somalia on October 30 carrying military supplies and equipment, as Ankara strengthens defence cooperation with Mogadishu.
MOGADISHU (Somali Report) — Turkey will deploy two naval warships to Somalia on October 30 carrying supplies and military equipment, Turkey’s defence ministry has said, as the two countries continue to strengthen their military cooperation.
The ships, TCG Gökçeada and TCG Yıldırım, are scheduled to depart for Somalia on Friday, according to a statement issued by the Turkish Ministry of National Defence.
The ministry did not specify the intended recipients of the supplies and military equipment aboard the vessels, leaving unclear whether they are destined for the Somali National Army or Turkish forces stationed in the country.
The planned deployment comes as Ankara deepens its defence and security partnership with Mogadishu, which has relied on international support to strengthen its armed forces and combat Al-Shabaab militants.
Turkey has become one of Somalia’s key security partners, providing military training, equipment and other assistance as the Somali government seeks to improve its forces’ ability to maintain security and counter insurgent threats.
The two countries have expanded cooperation in defence, military training and security in recent years, with Turkey maintaining a significant military presence in Somalia.
Separately, the Turkish defence ministry said Turkey’s land forces commander received his Somali counterpart and a delegation on October 24.
The meeting focused on continuing bilateral cooperation in defence, training and security, with the stated aim of strengthening the capabilities of Somalia’s armed forces and contributing to regional stability.
The ministry did not provide further details about the discussions or announce specific agreements arising from the meeting.

The planned arrival of the two warships comes amid ongoing efforts to build the capacity of Somalia’s security institutions as the country confronts persistent threats from Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-linked militant group that has waged an insurgency against the Somali government for more than a decade.
Turkey has invested heavily in its relationship with Somalia, extending its engagement beyond military cooperation to include infrastructure, humanitarian assistance, development and economic ties.
Ankara operates a military training facility in Mogadishu, known as TURKSOM, which has trained Somali soldiers as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s national security forces.
The two governments have also developed broader defence ties, including agreements intended to support Somalia’s military capabilities and maritime security.
Somalia, which has a long coastline along the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, has sought greater assistance in developing its security institutions and protecting its territorial waters.
However, the Turkish ministry’s statement did not clarify whether the latest shipment of military supplies would support Somali forces, Turkish personnel deployed in the country or other defence activities.
It also did not disclose the quantity or nature of the equipment being transported.
The deployment is expected to provide another indication of the continued military relationship between Ankara and Mogadishu, although the specific operational purpose of the shipment remains unclear.
