The decision to deny Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan entry to the United States has triggered international backlash, with politicians, sports figures and rights advocates condemning the move that ended his historic World Cup dream.

MOGADISHU (Somali Report) – The decision to deny Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan entry into the United States has sparked a wave of international condemnation, with politicians, sports figures, diplomats and rights advocates questioning whether anti-Somali prejudice played a role in blocking one of Africa's most celebrated football officials from the FIFA World Cup.
Artan, Africa's Referee of the Year and the first Somali ever selected to officiate at a FIFA World Cup, was detained for 11 hours at Miami International Airport before being deported despite holding a valid visa, FIFA accreditation, and a diplomatic passport.
For many observers, the incident was not simply an immigration dispute. It became a symbol of what critics describe as the Trump administration's long-standing hostility toward Somalia and Somali communities.
"Despite the circumstances, I am in a positive mood and focused on the next challenges in my refereeing career," Artan said after returning to Somalia, where he received a hero's welcome.
But while Artan responded with dignity, anger spread rapidly across the globe.
Former Somali diplomat Abukar Arman described the incident as "another manifestation of Trump's vindictive and obsessive politics, which routinely demonises anything associated with Somalia."
The controversy comes against the backdrop of years of inflammatory rhetoric by President Donald Trump toward Somalia and Somali Americans. Trump has repeatedly singled out Somalia in speeches, imposed travel restrictions on Somali citizens, and frequently targeted Somali-American communities in political attacks.
Many critics argue that Artan became the latest casualty of those policies.
The US government has offered conflicting explanations. Customs and Border Protection initially cited unspecified "vetting concerns." Later, an administration official alleged Artan had links to individuals suspected of involvement with terrorist organisations, though no public evidence has been presented.
Security experts questioned the claim.
CNN national security analyst Juliette Kayyem noted that in counterterrorism terminology, "links to suspected terrorists" is among the weakest possible designations.
"It could mean someone attended an event where another person was under surveillance," she said. "It means very little by itself."
Sports immigration lawyer Chris Carr also described the decision as highly unusual.
"Given his achievements and profession, this is a highly surprising decision," Carr said, noting that obtaining a US visa already involves extensive background screening.
The backlash quickly spread beyond Somalia.
Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticised the decision, saying global sporting events should strengthen international relations rather than undermine them.

"As a World Cup host, the United States shouldn't be flippantly barring officials from entering the country to do their jobs," Clinton wrote. "It's terribly backward and counterproductive."
Former British Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was even more direct.
"What an absolute disgrace," he said. "A FIFA-certified referee being denied entry to the United States purely because he is Somali. The World Cup is meant to bring people together. This is racism, plain and simple."
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised Artan's achievements and expressed solidarity.
"Omar Artan didn't just make the World Cup, he made history as the first Somali referee to get there and as Africa's best," Tedros wrote. "Being kept off the pitch you earned doesn't change that."
US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, herself a Somali-American often targeted by Trump, called the decision "shameful."
"The World Cup is supposed to be an event that transcends divisions," she wrote. "His story and talent will be celebrated long after this racist administration leaves office."
Support also came from across Africa.
Djibouti Finance Minister Ilyas Moussa Dawaleh declared, "We are all Omar Abdulkadir Artan," arguing that Africa's top referee deserved respect and recognition.
The controversy has also reignited concerns about the United States' readiness to host a truly global tournament.
Former Arsenal and England star Ian Wright described the event as becoming a "World Cup of chaos" as reports emerged of fans, journalists, officials and now referees facing visa obstacles.
"Every few hours it's another story," Wright said. "Fans denied, players denied, officials denied, journalists denied, now referees. Is this how the hosts behave?"
For Somalia, Artan's exclusion carried particular emotional weight.
Born in Mogadishu, he rose through the ranks despite decades of conflict and limited sporting infrastructure. His appointment to the World Cup was widely celebrated as proof that Somalis could succeed on the world's biggest stages.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud previously described him as "a symbol of inspiration for the new generation of Somalis."
Instead of officiating at football's biggest tournament, Artan returned home to cheering crowds at Aden Adde International Airport.
Yet many supporters believe the reaction to his treatment has transformed his story into something larger than football.
His World Cup dream may have been stopped at a US border checkpoint, but the global response has turned Omar Artan into a symbol of resilience, dignity and the growing debate over whether politics and prejudice are overshadowing the spirit of international sport.
