Eight armed men hijacked a cargo vessel off Somalia, raising fresh fears of a piracy resurgence as the Middle East war intensifies maritime security concerns.
MOGADISHU, Somalia (Somali Report) — A cargo vessel was hijacked off the coast of Somalia on Monday after eight armed men boarded and seized control of the ship, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said, raising fresh concerns about a resurgence of piracy in waters once notorious for attacks on commercial shipping.
UKMTO said in a security warning that it had received a report of an incident about four nautical miles south of Mareeyo, on Somalia’s northeastern coast. The agency classified the incident as a hijacking and advised vessels operating in the area to exercise caution and report suspicious activity.
According to the report, the vessel’s company security officer said eight unauthorized armed men had boarded the ship and subsequently taken control of it. UKMTO did not immediately provide details about the identities of the attackers, the vessel’s cargo or flag, or the whereabouts and condition of its crew. The ship’s ownership was also not disclosed.
The incident comes as maritime security agencies have warned of renewed opportunistic pirate activity along Somalia’s coastline. Several commercial vessels have been seized in recent months, reviving memories of the piracy crisis that once threatened one of the world’s busiest shipping corridors.
Piracy was widespread off Somalia between 2008 and 2018, when armed groups hijacked scores of vessels and held crews hostage, often demanding large ransoms. A major international naval campaign, along with improved security measures by shipping companies and the establishment of armed guards aboard some vessels, helped drive attacks sharply lower.
But maritime attacks began to re-emerge in late 2023, amid heightened security tensions across the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and wider region. The renewed activity has included attacks and hijackings involving commercial vessels operating near the Somali coast and in the Gulf of Aden.

The latest seizure adds to a series of hijackings recorded in 2026. Maritime security reports have identified several merchant vessels held by suspected Somali pirate groups, including the tanker Honour 25, hijacked in April; the general cargo vessel Sward, seized later that month; the tanker Eureka, taken in May; and the Asana, which was hijacked in July.
The latest incident occurred just four nautical miles from the Somali coast, underscoring the risks faced by commercial vessels navigating waters where piracy networks have historically operated. Maritime authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the seizure, while the status of the crew remains unconfirmed.
The hijacking also comes at a time when international naval resources are stretched by security threats elsewhere in the region, particularly around the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
For Somalia, the resurgence presents a serious security and economic challenge. The country’s long coastline lies alongside major maritime routes linking the Middle East, Asia and Europe, making the area strategically important for international trade.
The latest incident is likely to renew calls for stronger maritime surveillance and coordinated international efforts to prevent piracy from regaining the foothold it once had along Somalia’s coast.
