Turkey is reportedly demanding the immediate release of a Cameroon-flagged cargo ship seized by Somali pirates off Somalia, as Turkish naval vessels are said to have moved toward the area following the hijacking.
Mogadishu, Somali Report — The situation surrounding a Cameroon-flagged cargo vessel seized by suspected Somali pirates off the Somali coast has intensified, with reports indicating that Turkey is pressing the pirates to release the vessel immediately amid growing concerns over the safety of the ship and its crew.
The vessel was reportedly seized on Monday after armed men boarded and took control of it several nautical miles off the Somali coast. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that eight armed individuals had boarded the vessel and taken control of the ship. European naval authorities, including the EU’s Operation Atalanta, were also reported to be monitoring the incident.
The vessel has been identified in maritime databases as the MV Lutuf, a general cargo ship sailing under the flag of Cameroon. Available vessel-tracking information identifies the ship by IMO number 9109134 and records its recent movements involving Turkish ports.
Somali Report has received information from security sources indicating that Turkish authorities have demanded that the pirates release the vessel within a short period. The sources claim that Ankara has warned that military action could be considered if the armed group refuses to leave the ship.
These claims, however, have not yet been publicly confirmed by the Turkish government, and there is no official Turkish statement available at the time of publication confirming that Ankara has issued such an ultimatum or ordered an attack against the pirates.
The situation became even more sensitive after reports emerged of a strike near the area where the hijacked vessel was believed to be located. Somali Guardian reported that a drone strike in the Garmaal area of Puntland’s Nugaal coast killed four suspected Somali pirates on Tuesday, one day after the hijacking of the Cameroon-flagged vessel.
It remains unclear whether that strike was directly connected to the hijacking or who carried it out. Therefore, claims linking the reported strike directly to Turkish military operations should be treated as unconfirmed until an official source establishes responsibility.

Sources familiar with the developing situation have also claimed that two Turkish naval vessels are currently close to the area where the hijacked ship is believed to be located. According to the same information, negotiations have taken place between officials in Somalia and Turkey concerning the fate of the vessel and the safety of those onboard.
The reported developments are particularly significant because Turkey has maintained a close security and military partnership with Somalia for years. Ankara has a major military presence in Mogadishu and has played an important role in training Somali security forces.
There are also unverified reports that the cargo aboard the vessel may include construction materials and other equipment destined for Turkish-linked projects in Somalia. However, available public maritime records do not independently confirm that the ship was carrying military equipment or materials intended for a Turkish satellite facility in southern Somalia.
The vessel’s connection to Turkey is nevertheless supported by maritime records showing recent activity involving Turkish ports. One shipping source lists the MV Lutuf as a Cameroon-flagged cargo vessel that had recently sailed from Derince, Türkiye.
The latest incident has raised concerns over a possible confrontation between Turkish forces and Somali pirates if negotiations fail. Any military intervention could carry significant risks for the crew, the vessel and surrounding maritime traffic.
Somalia has faced a resurgence in piracy incidents in recent years, with international maritime authorities continuing to monitor attacks and hijackings along the country’s coastline. The latest seizure demonstrates that despite international naval patrols, piracy remains a security concern in the waters off Somalia.
For now, attention remains focused on the condition of the hijacked vessel, the safety of its crew and whether negotiations will result in its peaceful release.
