Somalia’s Danab commandos have killed a senior Al-Shabaab member and captured another suspected fighter during a planned military operation in Yaaq-Shabeel village in the Lower Juba region.
KISMAYO, Somalia (Somali Report) – Somali special forces have killed a senior member of the Al-Shabaab militant group and captured another suspected fighter during an operation in the southern Lower Juba region, according to information released about the military raid.
The operation was conducted by the Danab commandos of the Somali National Army in Yaaq-Shabeel village, approximately 13 kilometres (eight miles) from Kam-Jaroon, in Lower Juba, the information said.
The troops targeted a location used by the Al-Shabaab group in the area, killing Abdullahi Yarrow, who was identified as a senior member of the organisation operating in rural areas of western Lower Juba.
The forces also captured Abdifatah Mohamed, who was identified in the operation report as a member of the group operating in the western parts of the region. No further details were provided about the circumstances of his capture or whether other casualties were reported.
The military operation is part of ongoing efforts by Somali government forces to target Al-Shabaab positions and disrupt the group's activities in Lower Juba, a region that has experienced a prolonged insurgency by the militants.

The Danab commandos are a specialised unit of the Somali National Army trained to conduct targeted operations against armed groups. They have played a role in military campaigns aimed at weakening Al-Shabaab, which has waged an insurgency against Somalia's federal government for more than 15 years.
The group, which is affiliated with Al-Qaeda, regularly carries out attacks against security forces, government officials and civilians in Somalia. It has also targeted military installations and public places as part of its campaign to undermine the internationally backed government.
Somali authorities have repeatedly pledged to intensify military operations against the militants, seeking to reclaim territory and improve security across the country. However, Al-Shabaab continues to pose a significant security threat, particularly in rural areas of southern and central Somalia.
The latest operation in Lower Juba underscores the continued focus on targeting the group's fighters and positions in areas where government forces are conducting military campaigns.
The information released about the raid did not provide independent evidence confirming the identities or ranks of the individuals involved. The reported deaths and capture could not be independently verified.
