Somalia’s cabinet has approved two agreements with Mauritania on political consultations and diplomatic training while reviewing security efforts against Al-Shabaab.
MOGADISHU, Somalia (Somali Report) — Somalia’s cabinet on Thursday discussed the country’s overall security situation, with a particular focus on the fight against Al-Shabaab, as ministers also approved two agreements signed with Mauritania.
The weekly cabinet meeting was chaired by First Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama, in the absence of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, who travelled to Qatar on Wednesday for an official visit.
Most members of the cabinet attended the meeting, according to a statement issued after the session.
The ministers reviewed security developments and ongoing efforts to combat Al-Shabaab, the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group that has waged an insurgency in Somalia for more than a decade.
The government has made the fight against Al-Shabaab a central priority, as Somali security forces continue operations against the group with support from international partners.
The cabinet also approved two agreements between Somalia and Mauritania covering political consultations and cooperation on diplomatic training programmes.
The agreements are intended to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in political affairs and the development of Somalia’s diplomatic institutions.
Under the diplomatic training agreement, Somali diplomats are expected to benefit from training and capacity-building programmes aimed at improving their professional skills and strengthening the country’s diplomatic service.
The political consultations agreement is expected to provide a framework for closer coordination between the two governments on issues of mutual interest.
Somali authorities said the agreements would contribute to strengthening relations between Mogadishu and Nouakchott and expanding cooperation in political and diplomatic affairs.
The approval comes as Somalia seeks to deepen ties with African and Arab countries while strengthening its diplomatic capacity and international partnerships.

Mauritania and Somalia share membership in the African Union and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, providing several platforms for coordination on regional and international issues.

The cabinet’s approval of the agreements will now allow the government to advance their implementation, particularly in the areas of political consultations and diplomatic training.
The meeting took place a day after Prime Minister Hamza left for Qatar following an invitation from the Qatari government. His visit is expected to focus on strengthening strategic relations and cooperation between the two countries.
The cabinet meeting was therefore held under the leadership of First Deputy Prime Minister Salah, who oversaw discussions on both domestic security and Somalia’s foreign relations.
The government has continued to balance its security campaign against Al-Shabaab with efforts to strengthen state institutions and expand international partnerships.
Officials did not provide further details on specific security operations discussed during Thursday’s meeting or disclose new measures resulting from the cabinet’s review.
The approval of the Mauritania agreements nevertheless signals Mogadishu’s continued push to expand diplomatic cooperation while developing the skills and institutional capacity of its foreign service.
The agreements are expected to provide additional opportunities for Somali diplomats to receive specialised training and for the two governments to hold regular consultations on political matters.
Somali officials described the agreements as an important step towards consolidating bilateral relations and broadening cooperation between the two countries.
