Somalia is heading toward a severe humanitarian disaster as the United Nations World Food Programme warns that food assistance operations may be forced to stop by July without urgent financial support. Years of drought, conflict, and economic hardship have left millions struggling to survive, with communities across the country facing growing food insecurity.

According to the WFP, nearly six million Somalis are experiencing serious hunger, while close to two million children are suffering from acute malnutrition. Aid officials say the country is once again approaching conditions similar to the near-famine crisis seen in 2022.

Funding shortages have already forced humanitarian agencies to scale back assistance dramatically. The WFP says the number of people receiving aid has dropped from around two million to only 500,000 because of declining donor support.

Relief efforts have also been affected by disruptions in global supply routes linked to tensions in the Middle East, causing major delays in the delivery of emergency nutrition supplies needed to treat vulnerable children and families.
