MOGADISHU (Somali Report)Two Somali brothers from Kenya’s Wajir County have made aviation history after serving together in the cockpit of the same commercial passenger flight, marking a rare milestone for Somali professionals in East Africa’s aviation industry.

Captain Abdullahi Adan Hassan and his younger brother, First Officer Omar Adan, operated a return commercial flight between Nairobi and Mogadishu aboard a Fokker 70 last week. Abdullahi served as captain while Omar completed his first commercial flight as a licensed airline pilot.

The flight represented a significant personal achievement for the brothers, who trained together before beginning their aviation careers. For Omar, the journey marked the beginning of his professional career as a commercial airline pilot. For Abdullahi, it was an opportunity to share the cockpit with his younger brother during a milestone moment for their family.

The brothers’ achievement was recognised by 99s Flying School, where both pilots received their training. In a statement, the aviation school congratulated Omar on completing his first commercial flight and described the occasion as an important milestone that reflects the quality of its graduates.

The school said the achievement demonstrates the growing success of its alumni and highlighted the brothers’ accomplishment as a proud moment for the institution.

News of the flight quickly spread across social media, where Somalis and Kenyans celebrated the brothers’ accomplishment. Many described the moment as a source of pride for the Somali community and praised the siblings for demonstrating that dedication and education can open opportunities in highly specialised professions.

Several commentators also noted that Wajir County has produced a growing number of aviation professionals over the years, describing the brothers’ success as another positive example for young people aspiring to careers in aviation.

The commercial flight between Nairobi and Mogadishu also underscored the importance of air connections between Kenya and Somalia, one of the busiest regional routes serving business travellers, humanitarian organisations and families with ties across both countries.

For many Somalis, the image of two brothers commanding the same commercial aircraft symbolised more than professional success. It reflected years of commitment, training and family support that culminated in sharing responsibility for safely transporting passengers on an international route.

Community members said the achievement should inspire Somali youth interested in aviation and other technical professions that require years of study, discipline and professional certification.

The milestone comes as more Somalis continue to pursue careers in aviation, engineering, medicine and other specialised sectors across East Africa and beyond.

As the aviation industry continues to expand across the region, Captain Abdullahi Adan Hassan and First Officer Omar Adan have added their names to a growing list of Somali professionals breaking new ground. Their shared flight between Nairobi and Mogadishu stands as a memorable family achievement and an inspiring example for future generations hoping to pursue careers in the skies.
