MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia has formally launched the process of electing a new Speaker of the House of the People after Acting Speaker Sacdiya Yasin Haji Samatar appointed a parliamentary committee to oversee the election, marking the first official step toward filling one of the country's most powerful constitutional offices.
The position became vacant after Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur, widely known as Adan Madobe, was elected President of South West State, ending his tenure as Speaker of the Lower House.
In an official directive issued from her office, Acting Speaker Sacdiya named a nine-member parliamentary election committee responsible for organizing and supervising the entire electoral process. The committee has been instructed to begin work immediately and ensure that all procedures are conducted in accordance with the House's Rules of Procedure.
"The members listed above are instructed to promptly carry out the duties assigned to them in accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the House," the directive stated.
The appointment of the committee signals that preparations for the election are moving quickly, with lawmakers expected to gather at Villa Hargeisa, the headquarters of the Federal Parliament, where the vote is anticipated to take place in the coming days.
Even before the official campaign period has begun, competition for the influential parliamentary post has intensified, with several prominent politicians already entering the race.
Among the leading contenders is Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur (Jama), who recently secured a seat in the House of the People, making him eligible to contest the speakership.
Another major candidate is Member of Parliament Saadaad Aliyow, who resigned from his position as State Minister at the Ministry of Interior only a day before announcing his candidacy, signaling his determination to focus entirely on the campaign.

Both candidates have launched extensive lobbying efforts in Mogadishu, holding separate meetings with lawmakers in an attempt to secure enough parliamentary support ahead of the vote. Political observers say additional candidates could still enter the race before nominations officially close.
