Somalia’s political landscape has witnessed another notable development following the resignation of Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, MP Mahmoud Abdullahi Ahmed, popularly known as Abuukaate.
Mogadishu, Somalia — Somali Report: Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry of the Federal Government of Somalia, MP Mahmoud Abdullahi Ahmed, widely known as Abuukaate, has officially resigned from his government position, according to a resignation statement dated August 13, 2026.
In his letter, Abuukaate confirmed that he had stepped down from his role as Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Trade and Industry. However, he did not provide a specific explanation for his decision, leaving the circumstances surrounding his resignation unclear.
“I have officially resigned from my position as Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Trade and Industry of the Federal Government of Somalia,” Abuukaate said in his resignation letter.
The outgoing deputy minister also expressed appreciation to Somalia’s national leadership for giving him the opportunity to serve in the government of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. He described his appointment as an opportunity to contribute to the Somali people and serve the country.
“I would like to thank the country’s leadership for giving me the opportunity to serve the Somali community,” he said.
Abuukaate’s resignation comes as Somalia continues to undergo political, institutional and administrative developments. The Federal Government has been pursuing reforms aimed at strengthening state institutions and improving the effectiveness of government administration.
Political analysts are likely to watch the resignation closely because changes involving senior government officials can sometimes reflect broader political developments, although there is currently no confirmed evidence linking Abuukaate’s departure to a specific political dispute or policy disagreement.
As of the publication of this report, the office of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre had not issued an official statement explaining the resignation or confirming whether a replacement would be appointed immediately.

He was among the lawmakers who strongly campaigned in support of Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, commonly known as Jaamac, during the parliamentary process that resulted in his election as Speaker of the House of the People.
