MP Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur Jama has been elected Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People after securing 142 votes, succeeding Sheikh Adan Madobe.
MOGADISHU (Somali Report) — Member of Parliament Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur Jama has been elected as the new Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People following a parliamentary vote held today at Villa Hargeisa in Mogadishu.
Jama secured a decisive victory, receiving 142 votes, according to the results announced by Deputy Speaker Sadia Yasin. His only rival, MP Abdulqadir Omar Moallin Daada, received 30 votes.
The outcome had been widely anticipated, with Jama considered the leading candidate ahead of the election. His campaign was reportedly backed by influential figures within Somalia’s Federal Government, strengthening expectations that he would secure the speakership.
Jama succeeds Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe, who recently resigned from the speakership after being elected President of Somalia’s South West State. His election marks a significant change in the leadership of Somalia’s lower house at a politically sensitive moment for the country.
The newly elected Speaker is a veteran Somali politician who has held several senior government positions. Before his election, he served as Minister of Ports and Marine Transport in the Federal Government. He previously served as Minister of Defence, giving him extensive experience in both government administration and national security affairs.
Following the vote, Jama was sworn in at the same venue and formally assumed his responsibilities as Speaker of the House of the People. His inauguration clears the way for him to preside over parliamentary proceedings and oversee the legislative agenda during the current parliamentary session.
