UK Minister Kirsty McNeill has urged Somalia’s political leaders to engage in constructive dialogue, strengthen national unity and reach an agreement on the country’s political future.
McNeill made the appeal during a visit to Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, where she met President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Tuesday for talks on the country’s political and security situation.
The British minister stressed the importance of Somali stakeholders working together to overcome political divisions and build consensus on key national issues, according to statements following the meeting.
Her call comes as Somalia faces renewed political tensions between the federal government and opposition figures, as well as disagreements with some federal member states over elections, constitutional arrangements and the distribution of political powers.
McNeill said progress in political dialogue and an inclusive process would be important for Somalia as it seeks to address its challenges and strengthen stability.
She also linked political progress to the country’s security transition, saying clear plans for the transfer of security responsibilities would be important in maintaining international confidence and support for Somalia.
Britain remains a key international partner of Somalia and provides support in areas including development, humanitarian assistance and security. McNeill said the UK remained committed to helping Somalia build lasting security, stability and prosperity.
“The UK remains committed to supporting Somalia,” McNeill said, stressing the importance of political dialogue and efforts to build a more stable future for the country.

Her visit comes at a sensitive time for Somalia, where political disagreements have increasingly complicated efforts to establish a consensus on elections and governance.
The federal government has been pushing ahead with its political agenda, while opposition leaders and some regional authorities have called for broader consultations and an agreement involving key political stakeholders.
The differences have raised concerns among international partners that prolonged political disputes could distract from efforts to combat militant groups and weaken progress on security reforms.
McNeill also visited a World Food Programme warehouse in Mogadishu during her trip, where she inspected humanitarian supplies intended for communities affected by drought and food insecurity.
The visit highlighted the continuing humanitarian pressures facing Somalia, where millions of people remain dependent on assistance amid recurring climate shocks, displacement and insecurity.
British officials said the UK would continue supporting Somalia, but emphasized that political progress, inclusive dialogue and a credible plan for the country’s security transition would remain important factors in sustaining international backing.
McNeill’s appeal places renewed emphasis on dialogue as Somalia seeks to bridge widening political differences and establish a shared framework for its next phase of governance.
For international partners, a political settlement among Somali leaders is seen as essential to strengthening state institutions, improving security and ensuring that international assistance contributes to long-term stability rather than becoming a substitute for domestic political agreement.
