Sadia Bajaaj Released as Banaadir Appeals Court Overturns Three-Year Prison Sentence
Sadia Bajaaj has been released after the Banaadir Regional Court of Appeal overturned her three-year prison sentence, ruling that the original judgment lacked sufficient legal grounds.
The ruling was issued on Wednesday after Sadia’s defense team appealed the earlier judgment. Following a review of the case, the Court of Appeal annulled the original sentence, determining that it had not been supported by sufficient legal grounds.
The court subsequently declared Sadia free, bringing an end to more than 100 days of detention at Mogadishu Central Prison.
Speaking to journalists following the ruling, one of Sadia’s defense lawyers welcomed the decision and said the defense had maintained from the beginning that she was innocent and had not committed a criminal offense.
“From the beginning, we believed that Sadia was innocent and had not committed a crime. The court found that to be the case, and she has now been released,” said lawyer Mohamed Sheikh, who represented Sadia Macallin Ali.
Sadia’s relatives, members of the public from different parts of Mogadishu, and journalists covering the case attended Wednesday’s court session, where the decision was announced.
The young woman had attracted significant public attention in recent months, particularly on social media, where she became a prominent and frequently discussed figure. She also appeared in various media reports and attended several gatherings organized by opposition groups that criticized the Federal Government of Somalia.

Her detention and subsequent conviction had generated public debate, with supporters and members of the public closely following developments surrounding her case.
The Court of Appeal’s decision has now brought a major change in the case, with Sadia regaining her freedom after spending more than three months in custody.
